In September of 1999, my oldest daughter announced her engagement. It was one of those defining moments for a mother. My little girl had grown up and was about to enter a new phase of her life, one that both of us had always dreamed of.
And so we set out to find the perfect setting for the perfect day. We researched the internet, asked around for referrals and even scoured the yellow pages from front to back, only to find a handful of prospective wedding sites. As we toured the sites, it became more and more apparent that we weren’t going to find anything close to what my daughter had envisioned.
Tired and frustrated, my daughter and I were ready to settle on a wedding site located almost 2 ˝ hours away. And then I had a thought -- what did any of the wedding sites have to offer that we didn’t already have in our own back yard? With a little hard work and creativity, we could create the perfect place to get married. And so, with my daughter’s approval we started planning the wedding at our home.
Over the next 9 months we worked diligently to transform our property into a romantic garden setting large enough for a wedding and reception. We added a new lawn area and a large concrete patio for dancing. As the big day grew closer friends and family began to approach us about using the property for their own weddings and special events. And that’s when we realized what a great setting we had created-- why couldn’t we make our site available to other brides? And so we did. In June of 2000, Martha’s Garden hosted its first wedding.
Since then, our event site has grown tremendously. We have added water features, a ceremony area and a private bridal suite. Yet through the years our goal has always remained the same -- to offer a professionally run, beautifully landscaped event site to the local community. My daughter and I take great pride in helping bride’s plan the wedding of their dreams… just like we did.
